SAM IRVIN


Filmmaker-author Sam Irvin started his career as director Brian De Palma's assistant on THE FURY (with Kirk Douglas & John Cassavetes) and DRESSED TO KILL (with Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson & Nancy Allen).

Irvin has directed over 50 films and television shows, including ELVIRA’S HAUNTED HILLS (shot in Romania; starring Cassandra Peterson & Richard O’Brien), OBLIVION 1 & 2 (shot in Romania; starring George Takei & Julie Newmar), GUILTY AS CHARGED (with Rod Steiger, Lauren Hutton & Heather Graham), CHRISTMAS LAND (with Luke Macfarlane & Maureen McCormick); episodes of STRIP MALL (with Julie Brown & Cindy Williams); and all three seasons of the erotic gay supernatural series DANTE’S COVE (with Stephen Amell).

As a producer, Irvin co-executive produced Bill Condon’s Academy Award winning GODS AND MONSTERS (with Sir Ian McKellen, Brendan Fraser & Lynn Redgrave); and co-produced Greg Berlanti’s THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB (with Timothy Olyphant, Dean Cain & Billy Porter).

For Broadway, Irvin served as the historical consultant for the Tony Award winning LIZA’S AT THE PALACE (starring Liza Minnelli).

Over the years, Irvin has worked with such famous actors as Ryan Reynolds, Billy Bob Thornton, Faye Dunaway, Louise Fletcher, Cicely Tyson, Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Jane Seymour, George Hamilton, Mariel Hemingway, Joan Collins, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, William Shatner, Adam Ant, Kelsey Grammar, David Hyde Pierce, John Mahoney, Denise Richards, Shelley Duvall, David Carradine, Haylie Duff, Zelda Rubinstein, Jodie Sweetin, Dyan Cannon, Haley Joel Osment, Mark Hamill, and scores of others.

The Queer Screams Film Festival awarded Irvin its 2023 Career Achievement Award; and he has won 5 Rondo Awards, including the 2023 Writer of the Year Award for his coming-of-age memoir I WAS A TEENAGE MONSTER HUNTER! (featuring a Foreword by Cassandra Peterson).

His other books include the acclaimed biography KAY THOMPSON: FROM FUNNY FACE TO ELOISE (published by Simon & Schuster); the novel ORBGASM: AN EROTIC PULP SCI-FI SATYRICON; the children’s book parody SAM’S TOILET PAPER CAPER!; and THE EPIC SAGA BEHIND “FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY” (featuring a Foreword by Anne Rice and an Afterword by Guillermo del Toro).

Irvin lives in Los Angeles with his husband Gary Bowers, together since 1982.
