For some folks, on your own time might mean shopping, for others additional activities, meals in different places, maybe beach time and extra time to interact with the locals. This was a post Covid trip and we felt very safe. Our local guides were knowledgeable and delighted in sharing their country with us. We were at the locations that we think of as must do… the Olympic Stadium, the Parthenon, the shopping (and eating) around the Parthenon, the flea market/shopping areas, etc. The museums that we went to held really interesting items that we were glad we had a chance to see. Mask making was a lot more fun than I anticipated. Our Craftours backpacks came in handy for folks to leave a few things in baggage storage at the hotel in Athens as we headed to the Islands. And then the Islands. I had no idea how much I’d enjoy them. At Mykonos many of us decided to book a tour to the local island of Delos on our free day. It’s a fantastic archaeological site. From our outstanding hotel we walked to the beach and dipped into the Sea, then ate at one of the many beachside restaurants. At Santorini we took the iconic blue dome photo and wandered around the little town finding souvenir surprises. Yes we bought the little ouzo bottle shaped by the island because it was so darn cute. We toured the island and saw the many villages, the sea from several vantage points, several of us walked up to the highest point (from the bus parking, not the bottom of the mountain, LOL). We tried several different rooftop restaurants while we were there. So much fun watching the water and the people, and just enjoying the view. The variety of beaches was interesting… black, red, and white sands depending on what volcanic activity was the source of what became sand. The prehistoric town of Akrotiri ruins were a surprise to me. I was not aware of the “Pompei of Greece” but it was a great place to visit. What is excavated is entirely enclosed in a huge building to protect it. Our guide there shared her love of the site with us. The pottery stop, what a great experience. The daughter translated for her father as he demonstrated how to make a bowl. Then some of our group tried, not as easy as he made it all appear but the end results were great under his tutelage. The final night of the trip our group ate together and we all seemed to agree that it was really hard to pick the best part of the trip. Each day was the best, and none of the prior days were any less as our tour progressed."
